QIT UGS-Rutile

QIT stands for Quebec Iron & Titanium,
it owns an ilmenite mine in northeastern
Quebec; the ore is shipped to Tracy where
it is processed to titanium dioxide slags,
iron pigs, steel billets and steel auto parts.

« UGS »(stands for upgraded slag) is a form of titanium dioxide slag,
obtained by refining Sorelslag by diluted hydrochloric acid.

Sorelslag has the following general formula:

TiO2 82%
FeO 8.0%
SiO2 2.0%
Al2O3 3.0%
MgO 5.0% Total 100%

The « UGS » slag used in this experiment
has the following formula
It is a « synthetic rutile » :

TIO2 94.13%
FE2O3 1.09%
AL2O3 0.45%
CAO 0.11%
MGO 0.45%
P205 0.004%
MNO 0.02%
SIO2 2.69%
CR2O3 0.08%
V2O5 0.42%
ZRO2 0.07%
NB2O5 0.01%
CL- 0.12%
L.O.I 0.35%

It was 140 mesh sieved.
